If your business page is on a ‘Standard’ or a ‘Business’ template, chances are you’ve received an email advising you that, on 23rd August, your Facebook page template will be changed.

Why the change?

It’s likely this is a move by Facebook to make business pages more useful for business owners so they can use it as a destination for their customers – perhaps even replacing the need for a website. You can read more about those recent changes here: https://blog.bufferapp.com/new-facebook-page-design

What do I need to do?

If you haven’t received an email from Facebook, then there’s no need to do anything. Although this might be a good opportunity to review the template you are on and the tabs you are using.

If you have received an email from Facebook then here’s what you should do:

Open the email and click on the ‘Learn More’ button. This will take you to another screen where you’ll have a few different options to choose from. You’ll be given three options to choose from.

This will move your page over to the Services template. Before you click this, be aware that any content you have in your existing templates – such as apps that you’ve built from scratch – may become disconnected during this process. (It’s never happened to me, but Facebook do warn that it is possible).

Once the change is made, you shouldn’t notice too many differences.  The order that content shows on your page and the list of apps in your lefthand navigation may have changed.

If this is the case, then it’s easy to change the order of things, add or remove apps and reconnect any apps that have disappeared. Just head to your page settings, click on ‘Edit Page’ and scroll down to the Tabs section.

To change the order of your tabs, simply click on the three lines to the left of the tab name and drag the tab up or down.

To switch a tab off, click on the ‘Settings’ button and slide the toggle of ‘OFF’. Note that for a Services page some apps are compulsory and can’t be switched off – such as ‘Home’, ‘Posts’, ‘About’, ‘Photos’, ‘Videos’, ‘Community’ and ‘Info & Ads’.

To add new Tabs, click on the ‘Add a Tab’ button at the bottom of the list, choose the app you want to add and click the ‘Add’ button on its right-hand side.

The biggest benefit of being on a Services template is the ability to use the Services Tab to highlight what your business offers to people who visit your page.

Option Two: Keep My Existing Template

If you click on this, your page should stay as it is now.

Option Three: Choose Different Template

Facebook offers lots of different templates to suit different business types. While all the templates have access to all of the apps, choosing your template will signal to Facebook what type of business you are, and gives you some suggestions on what types of content you could be prioritising.

It’s all quite easy to do, but if you get stuck or need some help, then take advantage of our Social Helpdesk service where your first 15-minute phone call is absolutely FREE!
